Welcome to Korčula
Korčula Island is located in the southern part of the Adriatic Sea and is part of the Kvarner. The island is uninhabited and covered with dense woods. Situated on the island is a small, 12th-century town named Korcula with a population of approximately 1,000 people. Although Korcula’s history is quite old, its name may have derived from the Greek word ‘corinth,’ which refers to Corinth’s marble. In ancient times, Korcula served as a trading center between Italy and Greece. During the 15th and 16th centuries, wars, storms and illness caused severe damage to Korcula’s buildings, leaving little to no trace of the once-grand town. The town of Korcula is situated on the island’s southern coast. It consists mainly of a harbor and fishing port; however, it also has a church, a castle and several typical stone houses. The town is famous for its sweet wine called Ribola, which is produced by local grape cultivations.
